BPL XV: The Gilded Age A Cinematic Chronicle

Translating a 1,200-player event into a living, breathing storybook.

The Vision: A Storybook Come to Life

For the 15th BPL league, I wanted to move beyond a standard trailer and create a tangible piece of history. I independently developed the “Pop-up Book” concept—a visual journey where the league’s 1,200-player scale and “Settlers” mechanics are told as chapters in a medieval chronicle.

By taking full creative autonomy over the storyboarding, I was able to transition from a weathered leather tome into a sprawling 3D world, allowing the BPL team to focus on the event while I handled the entire visual pipeline.

The Craft: Honoring the Source Material

To ground “The Gilded Age” in the world of Path of Exile, I integrated specific nods to the game’s creators and its community:

  • The New Zealand Connection: I utilized high-resolution photography of New Zealand’s iconic landscapes for the environmental backdrops. This serves as a direct tribute to the heritage of the game’s developers and gives the “pop-up” pages a sense of cinematic scale and prestige.

  • Character Integration: I brought raw in-game character models directly into my 3D engine, applying custom lighting and textures to ensure they felt like part of the high-fidelity “Gilded” aesthetic.

Volumetric World Building [00:30]

The forests and mountains don't appear — they grow. Built to literally emerge from the parchment using 3D shadows that give the paper tangible physical depth. Volumetric lighting creates the sense that light is passing through a real atmosphere, not a digital render.

The Gilded Finish — Luxury at Scale [01:32]

Custom metallic shaders applied to the BPL XV crest give the final reveal the weight of a high-stakes invitation. The "Candy-Gloss" finish — that signature SugarCaned luxury — makes a community event feel like a collector's piece. This is the moment the video earns its name.

Information as a Design Element

Bounties, Lab Races, Collection Goals — 1,200 players needed to understand the event flow before the first bell rang. Every data point was timed and motion-designed to land at an emotional peak, not interrupt one. The video doesn't just announce the league. It onboards the community.

The Result: A League That Felt Legendary

Rendered at 4K 60fps despite complex volume rendering and deep layer hierarchies, the final piece held its quality on every screen — from a Discord embed to a full monitor presentation. By the final color grade, BPL XV had a trailer that matched the ambition of its 1,200 players. Not a promo. A chronicle.

"We didn't make an announcement video. We made the opening cinematic for a legend that hadn't happened yet."
